GPC: Ukraine Market Outlook. Chickpeas.

According to the information received during the GPC Ukraine Conference, the production of chickpeas in Ukraine amounted to 41 thousand tons in 2020, which is 31% less than in 2019.

In 2020, Ukraine exported 43 thousand tons of chickpeas, which is the highest indicator compared to all pulses, excluding peas. The main importing countries of Ukrainian chickpea are Pakistan, Egypt and the EU countries.

This crop is grown mainly in Odesa, Kharkiv and Poltava regions. The sown area under chickpeas amounted to 20 thousand hectares in 2020, which is 10 thousand hectares less than the previous season.

It is expected that the production of chickpea will be 27 thousand tons this year. However, it is a risky crop for farmers. The yields of chickpeas heavily depend on weather conditions, are not stable and can vary from 1.5 to 4.5 t/ha.  All together these factors prevent farmers from expanding their planting lands under this crop.

GPC’s experts emphasize that the domestic chickpea market will develop, especially in those regions with a moisture deficit. Besides that, Ukraine has a great advantage due to its fertile soil.

Next time we are going to enlighten more details on peas market in Ukraine. See you in the next one.
